The Wages Protection System (WPS) is the UAE’s electronic salary transfer system, launched by MOHRE in 2009. Private-sector employers pay wages through approved banks, exchange houses or financial institutions, which report each payment to MOHRE and the Central Bank so the government can confirm that employees are paid in full and on time.

Yes, for private-sector establishments registered with MOHRE, whatever their size. Free zones set their own rules: JAFZA, DAFZA and DMCC require WPS, while DIFC and ADGM run separate employment frameworks. Yes. WPS applies to MOHRE-registered companies regardless of headcount, so a business with two employees must pay salaries through WPS just like a large employer. Ministerial Resolution No. 340 of 2026, effective 1 June 2026, makes salaries due by the 1st of each Gregorian month for the previous month’s work. An employer is compliant if at least 85% of total wages are paid on time. MOHRE now escalates late payments from Day 2, with the strongest penalties applying from Day 21.

Under the 2026 rules, MOHRE sends alerts from Day 2 of a delay and can suspend new work permits from Day 5. Administrative fines and possible downgrading follow from Day 11, and labour disputes open automatically from Day 16. From Day 21, cases can lead to asset seizure, travel bans or referral to public prosecution.

A SIF (Salary Information File) is the file submitted to a WPS agent to pay salaries. It contains one Employee Detail Record (EDR) per employee, with the MOL person ID, IBAN, routing code, pay period and amounts, plus a Salary Control Record (SCR) with the employer’s MOHRE ID and totals. Sign up for a free Peko Corporate account and open Payroll. Onboarding asks for your company’s basic details, number of employees, logo, authorised signature and salary bank (IBAN) details. Add employees one by one or in bulk with Peko’s Excel template, then run payroll, review the calculations and pay salaries. Most companies are set up within 1-2 days.

Most WPS transfers reach employees within 1 – 3 working days of submission, depending on your bank or exchange house’s cut-off times and whether the SIF data is correct. Wages are due by the 1st of the month under the 2026 rules, so submit a few working days early to allow for weekends and public holidays.

Common causes are an SCR total that doesn’t match the employee records, an invalid IBAN or routing code, an expired work permit, a duplicate employee ID or, since MOHRE’s December 2025 WPS upgrade, a salary that differs from the registered contract.
